PRESS RELEASE BASICS

Press releases should inform your readers of Who, What, Where, When and How. Instead of "selling," present the facts in an engaging way.

Since newspapers receive an overwhelming amount of releases, chances are slim that your release will be selected. Sites such as
PR Web will post press releases online. Or if you'd rather not post online, consider sending your release directly to clients and friends.

Begin with a strong headline to grab the reader's attention.

First Paragraph
After the headline, add your information in this format: "City, State," "Month Day Year," "Organization Name," then go into your first sentence and lead paragraph. (Some online sites may require their own format, so be sure to check before submitting your release.)

Body
Put the paragraphs into block format without indents. Your release should be short and to the point - less than 500 words if possible. Aim for 3 - 4 paragraphs and try to a personal quote (or quotes).

Ending
Add "About XYZ:" with "XYZ" being the company, person, or product the release is about. Describe the subject of your release by explaining what it is, where it's located and what it does. Then add the name, phone number and title of the contact person.
