In This Issue

Hi! How's your summer going? I've been busy catching up on my Harry Potter books so that I can get to the final one. If you've seen the size of the books, you know that's no easy task!

In this issue we're covering the fourth topic in our series about submitting your non-fiction book for publication. It's much easier to complete a large task (or a large book) if you break it down into smaller steps.
Until next time, Deborah

FIVE STEPS TO SUBMITTING YOUR NON-FICTION BOOK - PART 4

On to step 4 - Writing the Query Letter.

What's a Query Letter?

A query letter is usually your first contact with an agent or publisher. Your letter should entice the reader to want to see your book proposal.

The query can be sent to multiple agents/publishers at one time. Stick to the facts. Never use subjective descriptions like "this is a great book." Your letter should give that impression without your having to tell them. Once you've sent your query, don't call to follow up unless the agent (or editor) indicates that you can contact them by phone.

What's included:

  1. First paragraph - State the title of your book. Mention if you have a personal connection with the agent or editor. For example, you met them at a writing conference, or you read a book that the agent represented.

  2. Second paragraph - Include an explanation of what your book is about. Include a "hook" to get the reader's interest. Mention a problem that your target audience experiences. Show how reading your book will help them solve it.

  3. Third paragraph - Here's where you put your previous writing credits and experience with the subject matter. Why are you the best author for this book?

  4. Closing - Ask if you can send your book proposal or sample chapters.
