by Deborah A. Bailey

Did you know that tenses (past, present and future) come in three types: Simple, Perfect and Progressive?

Simple Past - A past state or action.

She walked to the park.
Her train left last night.
He called her on her cell phone.

Past Perfect (Pluperfect) - A completed action that has occured in the past, formed using "had" and a past participle.

She had walked in the park that morning.
They had taken the train the night before.
He had called her on her cell phone.

Past Progressive - A state or action ongoing in the past, formed using "was" or "were" and a present participle.

They were walking in the park.
She was taking the train.
He was going to call her last night.

A participle is a verb form. "Walked," "taken" and "called" are past participles. "Walking," "taking" and "going" are present participles.
